A man was recently killed in a Detroit traffic crash after law enforcement officers tried to stop motor vehicles in an effort to prevent possible human trafficking. The accident occurred when law enforcement attempted to pull over a Dodge Intrepid to identify two passengers in a vehicle. The vehicle in question, however, did not slow down and continued traveling at a high rate of speed. The speeding vehicle eventually collided with another vehicle that was entering an intersection. The other vehicle flipped over, and the driver was killed. Law enforcement responded to the accident by shutting down northbound and southbound lanes of traffic.
This accident highlights one of the many ways in which speeding can result in a motor vehicle accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that speeding kills approximately 10,000 individuals each year. Not only does speeding make road conditions much more dangerous for drivers, speeding also significantly increases the likelihood that a car crash will occur. It should be noted that speeding does not refer to motor vehicle drivers who merely exceed the speed limit, but rather motor vehicle operators who drive too fast for road conditions.
Reasons for Speeding
Despite the danger created by speeding, there are several reasons why motor vehicle operators still tend to speed. Some of the most common reasons include the following:
- Disregard for the Law: Some drivers speed and demonstrate aggressive driving patterns because they do not care about the law or the potential impact their driving could have.
- Drivers Do Not Think the Rules Apply to Them: There are some drivers who think that posted speed limits signs do not apply to them and that they are above the law.
- Drivers with Late Schedules: Motor vehicle drivers who are running late are more likely to travel at speeds greater than the speed limit.
- No One is Around: Motor vehicle operators who believe that no one else is on the road are likely to speed.
- Racing Motor Vehicles: Motor vehicle drivers who are engaged in driving are known to speed.
- Traffic Congestion: Jammed or slowed down traffic flow can cause motor vehicle operators to demonstrate aggressive driving behaviors, including speeding.
These reasons and several others can create particularly dangerous driving conditions including difficulty in maneuvering around obstacles, loss of control of motor vehicles, inability to make a safe turn or change lanes, and inability to stop quickly.
Speeding can injure various parties including drivers, passenger, and pedestrians and result in injuries such as burns, broken bones, fractures, sprains, traumatic brain injuries, whiplash, and in the very worst cases even death.
